Consultation Infectious Disease service

Joint prostheses are constantly increasing. Prosthetic joint infections are rare but dreaded surgical complications. Bone infections are infections of the bone. Both infections result either of a preceding operation with development of a biofilm on the prosthetic joint, through the expansion of an adjacent infection (skin infection) or by spreading through the bloodstream

The treatment of prosthetic joint infections or bone infections consists of a surgical cleaning or removal of the prosthesis and a long antibiotic therapy, which must be carefully selected to the pathogen found.

In a collaboration with orthopedists and microbiologists, we advise you with questions about prosthetic joint- and bone infections either in our outclinic or during their inpatient stay at the orthopedic University Hospital Balgrist Zürich and in the Schulthess Klinik Zürich.
