Viruses

The employees of our clinic have a great knowledge regarding viral diseases. This includes the usual viral diseases which are annually present (especially respiratory infections like flu), as well as viral infections that can occur in immunocompromised people or may cause immunosuppression (eg, HIV infection). Cytomegalovirus, Epstein Barr virus, other herpes infections). An important aspect is also preventing the spread of viruses in the hospital such as Noroviruses and influenza viruses. In general, our expertise is asked in severe cases and in special situations (virus infections in pregnant women, early summer encephalitis (TBE), in immunosuppressed patients (eg transplant recipients, HIV-infected, patients undergoing chemotherapy. In addition, we help repeatedly in the diagnosis of viral diseases in travelers returning.

A special research project under the support of the University of Zurich “Clinical research focus - KFSP-viral infectious diseases" wants to improve the diagnostic virology in immunosuppressed patients and wants to develop new therapeutic strategies during early HIV infection. A special challenge are each again emerging viral diseases such as SARS, MERS coronavirus or EBOLA,that can cause outbreaks and develop pandemics. Here the Deparment of Infectious Diseases and Hospital Epidemiology is instrumental in developing appropriate prevention approaches for the university hospital and other hospitals.,
